March 25, 2008

The Auglaize County Sheriff's Office has received several complaints involving several different types of scams.  The latest scam involves an e-mail that gives the appearance that it comes from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

The e-mail tells the recipient to Western Union a substantial amount of money to an agent, and gives a name and address of the agent.  For example, Agent Terry Hensley at 2207 7th. Avenue, New York, NY, 10027.

There is a reply address on the e-mail that shows paytax@irs.gov.   However, when a reply is attempted, you are directed to another address of irs.agent@consultant.com.  The IRS has been notified, and they confirmed this would be a scam.  The IRS does not send out unsolicited e-mails, and they do not have an electronic mailbox set up so anyone can contact them with complaints of this nature.

The perpetrator tells the recipient to wire the money to a specific address.  With the knowledge of a control number connected to this wire transfer, the perpetrator can walk into any Western Union office in the world and collect the money.

If anyone receives something of this nature that they question the legitimacy of, feel free to contact the Auglaize County Sheriff's Office at 419-739-6565 or their local law enforcement agency.   You can also contact the IRS through their website.
