Office of the Auglaize County Engineer

The Auglaize County Engineering and Highway Department complex is located at 1014 South Blackhoof Street, Wapakoneta, Ohio 45895.  The County Engineer's  Office, along with the Engineering/Surveying Department is housed at this site along with the maintenance and construction operations.  This 12 acre complex includes the offices, county garage, bridge precasting building, salt storage facilities and an equipment storage structure formerly owned by the Ohio Department of Transportation.

The Auglaize County Engineer is also responsible for the oversight of two other County offices, the Tax Map and GIS Departments, both housed at the County Administration Building at 209 South Blackhoof Street, Wapakoneta, Ohio 45895.

Duties of the Auglaize County Engineer

To hold the Office of County Engineer, Ohio law requires that a person to hold both an Ohio Professional Engineer's and Professional Surveyor's license and to be elected every four years by the citizens of the county.  Ohio is the only such state that requires both licenses and elects the County Engineer.

ROADS:  The County Engineer's Office is responsible for the maintenance and repair of 350 miles of County roadways within Auglaize County.  The system encompasses over 2,200 acres of road right-of-way, ???? drainage culverts of various sizes, 3,600 warning/regulatory sigh installations.

BRIDGES:  This department is responsible for 375 bridges on the County and Township roadway systems along with any bridge on a State Route with a municipal corporation.  A bridge by definition, is any structure having and opening of 10' or greater.  The County is also responsible for any culvert on a Township roadway that is 36" in diameter or larger.

DRAINAGE:  Currently, this department is responsible for the maintenance and repair of 254 miles of subsurface and open drainage ditches, previously petitioned through the Auglaize County Commissioners and Soil and Water Conservation District.

Engineering & Surveying:  Ohio law requires the County Engineer to be the "Engineer" for the 14 Boards of Township Trustees in Auglaize County, encompassing an additional 323 miles of public highways.  The County Engineers provides engineering for Township roadside drainage and pavement improvements and, when requested by the trustees, assists with construction of safety and roadway improvements on the Township system.

The County Engineer's Office also provides all surveying, design and inspection of all petitioned drainage improvements through the Board of County Commissioners.  Assistance (surveying, assessment determination, bidding and contracting documents)  is also provided to the SWCD petitioned drainage projects.

The Office also provides Engineering services, when requested by the County Commissioners, on County owned properties such as the Neil Armstrong Airport, Auglaize Acres, County Fairgrounds and Law Enforcement Facility.

Tax Map:  Ohio law provides that the County Engineer is the County's Tax Map Draftsman.  All deeds, parcel splits, surveys and subdivision plats are approved at this office.  Tax Map personnel are responsible for the drafting of all the tax mapping and providing current parcel information to the GIS department for publishing on the County's website.
